The album – made up of 8 sequences, which seamlessly blend the styles of both masters – was recorded at the beginning of 2013 over various studio sessions in Berlin and will be released as a series of three 12″s and a CD album.
The record gives common voice to two independent yet mutually supporting musical journeys, achieving a singular expression of club-orientated electronic music and the freedom of organic musical experimentation.

Once again Marcelus conjures up the spirits of Detroit and Berlin techno, moulding them here into dreamy modern house incantations—an inspired blurring of the lines the well-versed Frenchman has been rehearsing over the last decade. It was two astounding first releases for DJ Deep’s Deeply Rooted House imprint that made the underground dance community sit up and take notice, records that emitted an unprecedented level of craftsmanship for a fresh-faced newcomer.

He has continued to impress on follow up releases over the last few years, meanwhile proving to be a flexible and intriguing sound designer, playing with numerous styles and yet always turning in something distinctly ‘Marcelus’. ‘Emerald’ is no different, but instead of tough and rushing euphoria, he delivers something altogether warm and frothy, revealing yet another side to this prismic producer, as well as adding a lighter node to the Tresor catalogue.

Like Brassaï, Roger Semsroth has spent the last decade trawling the shadows and writing in the dark. But where the seamy streets of nocturnal pre-WWII Paris provided the canvas for Brassaï’s widely heralded photography, it’s the sonic sluices of post-war Berlin and from the self-contained netherworlds of the city’s underground techno nexus that Sleeparchive derives from.

After spending five years stealthy developing the project through a series of bi-annual and hand-stamped set of releases, eked via his eponymous imprint, in 2011 Sleeparchive joined Tresor with ‘Ronan Point’ — an EP of tracks constructed directly from material from Semsroth’s live set. Now comes more fresh works from the master of haunting, compelling minimalism in this first instalment of a two-part EP for the label.

Taking its title from one of Brassaï’s famous sequence of prints, ‘A Man Dies In The Street’ translates the eight snapshots of a man collapsing on a Parisian sidewalk (captured by Brassaï in 1932) into a chilling storyboard of subtle fluctuations, ebbs and monochrome tones. As ever the genius is in the reductive palette, that here Semsroth paints into a rich splay of emotions mimicking the initial anxious discovery of the body, the curiosity of the gathering crowd, the excitement and building anticipation through to an aggressive and pummelling sense of realisation on the close. But is it at the loss of life, or the loss of spectacle? As Brassaï toys with ambiguity in his photographs, Sleeparchive’s music is just as hazy, deep and full of shady nuances that, like treasure, only appear if you’re willing to keep probing.

Techno was inevitable for the Zenker Brothers. Eldest brother Dario cottoned on first, using his family ties to Munich’s infamous Ultraschall club to edge into the DJ booth as an enthu- siastic teen. Following its demise he migrated to Harry Klein with the rest of the Ultraschall crew, picking up a residency in 2006 that has only just been brought to a close.

It was at this stage Marco received his own electronic awakening. Inspired by a set of his brother’s at the very same institution, he joined Dario there a year later. Production-wise, however, the brothers continued to pursue separate paths: Dario sewing an assortment of seeds and racking up a wayfaring collec- tion of records for labels like Frozen Border, Vakant, Time To Express and Traut Muzik. Meanwhile Marco was cultivating deep and dreamy techno on the Zenkers’ own Ilian Tape stable.

After years of playing and working together side by side, in 2011 they emerged in official collaboration as Zenker Brothers with ‘Berg 10 EP’. Now, the Zenker Brothers are back with their first release for Tresor, brandishing a matured sound and level of sensitivity yet displayed by either before. ‘Lion In Mars’ is like a fresh breeze billowing through the Tresor vaults. Honing in on signa- tures from the archive and repackaging them in modern sentiment, here Zenker Brothers deliver a record that gleans through the generations to deliver a cunning symbiosis of techno future, past and present. On the A-side “Knighthof” and “The Future Is You” offer driving vintage basement techno with a Zenker twist, whilst B-side tracks “Davin” and “Cosmilian”, the EP’s clattering dystopic closer, blend Detroit tones together with their respective Ilian-proven pallets.

Under the guise of it’s own 10-year dormant Archiv Series—which saw cuts from the likes of Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Blake Baxter and Eddie Flashin’ Fowlkes brought back to wax and dancefloors worldwide—comes a reissue EP straight from the heart of the club’s former Wertheim department store days, courtesy of long-time resident Juan Atkins.
On the A-side there’s the slow-burning spangled ballad “I Love You”, from his 2004 record ‘Fast Forward’ – the last track to be played at the old Tresor, while the B-side hosts a stone cold Metroplex classic: “Techno City ’95”, a track so slick it’ll never go out of style. Sit back and remember the good times, or discover them a-new, all over again.

For over two decades, Tresor Berlin has stood as a bastion of techno and house for the world. In 2013, the club begins its showcase residency in London with a slew of warehouse parties. The first took place in a secret east London warehouse location with a line-up that typified the sound the club had and continues to represent.

Juan Atkins, who found a second home in Berlin at Tresor, has long been cited as one of the godfathers of techno. His releases date back to 1992 on the label and have since come to epitomise the long standing connection between Detroit and Berlin. With releases being constant throughout the labels 23 year existence, Juan Atkins continues to call Tresor home.

Accompanying the old guard is the new. DJ Deep’s 2012 critically acclaimed mixed compilation Kern Vol.1 was the first in what is set to be a series which documents each selected artist’s past, present and future. Dasha Rush has been a long time friend and collaborator of the club with her regular event “All You Need Is Ears”. Finally, Psyk is a young and promising artist who has been bleeping on Tresor’s radar for quite some time now. His track “Jackin” as Maan featured on DJ Deep’s Kern Vol.1

When the sweat started to drop from the ceiling it nearly felt like being at home. The visual installation by The Core.Berlin drove the crowd insane and the general feedback from the audience was overwhelming. Thanks for sharing such a great night together with us. And for the ones who might have missed it. We will be back.
Tresor Honey Production (German version below)

Between May and July of 2012, curious activities were observed here at Tresor; thousands of bees were seen following very distinct routes, flying in, out and around the roof of Köpenicker Strasse 70.

Following the installation of several beehives on the top levels of the Kraftwerk which houses Tresor, the bees spent three months harvesting the pollen from Linden flowers, Locust trees and ailanthus’ (or Trees of Heaven) all around the city. The result: a limited production of 200 honey jars which are available to purchase between Christmas and New Years Eve at Tresor.

For each one of these jars, 750g of nectar had to be transported to the hives by the bees. This amounts to approximately 30,000 flights, during which nearly 50,000,000 flowers are visited. This means that for the 250g of honey contained in each of our jars, the total trajectory travelled by the bees is equal to two trips around the world.

The bees however aren’t without aid! The honey they produce is often used by the bees themselves to fuel them during their work, as its a fantastic source of natural energy. In Ancient Greece, athletes were known to use honey as a “dopant” – being one of the richest forms of liquid dextrose.

Answering to the sharp decline of bee colonies and its direct implications for fruit and vegetable production, Stadtbienenhonig are the masterminds behind this project. Beyond their activities in Berlin, Stadtbienenhonig also promote their project in Detroit, encouraging citizens to start beekeeping – a great way to produce honey while also beautifying neighbourhoods through pollination.

Interestingly, city-produced honey is of equal quality to honey that is produced in the country side and on farms. Indeed, the production process is such that the bees filter any pollutants out of the honey, ensuring that it remains naturally pure.

The environmentally-friendly integration of beehives aims at supporting the resettlement of honeybees by converting abandoned former industrial sites and vacant land into ecologically valuable habitats – “nectar corridors” filled with flowers, a project which saw Stadtbienenhonig receive the 2008 Holcim Award for sustainable construction.

Artist: DJ Deep
Title: Kern Vol.1
Label: Tresor Records
Format: CD / 2 x 12”s
Cat No: KERN001CD / EP1 / EP2
Release Date: Nov. 12th, 2012

Tresor are pleased to announce Kern: a showcase of old meets new, house meets techno, in the form of an exciting mix series aimed at delivering fresh narratives in electronic dance music.

Kern will provide an insight into the tastes and personal histories of some of the scene’s leading lights, allowing artists free reign to weave their own story through a mixture of rarities and brand new material. Kern transcends the usual parameters of an artist’s mix to present a unique and timeless listening experience, which breaks down into a DJ-friendly and highly collectable trio of releases.

Kicking off the series is Parisian protagonist Cyril Etienne aka DJ Deep. Selected for his career-defining dedication to Detroit techno, NYC and Chicago house – “the roots” of house and techno – as DJ, producer and head of the Deeply Rooted House empire, DJ Deep heads back to his own origins to present Kern Vol.1:

“As I was struggling to find an order through all the great material on the Tresor catalogue or what my label currently does, I came up with this idea of a DJ’s diary – like the picture of a guy writing down in his notebook which new and classic tracks would be relevant today. I kept this concept in mind when making my selection, which really helped me to simply follow my feelings and the flow of the music.”

The mix begins with a track recovered from the Tresor archives: A.E.S’s “Music In My Head” produced by Arthur Forest, Eddie ‘Flashin’ Fowlkes and Santonio. The latter, who also brings a never-released title from ’93 forth, “Amnesia”. Along with Xperiment’s “Karn Evil #10” and mix-closer “111”, an early record from St. Germain as Deepside, these all make up The Rarities EP – one of two 12” records escorting Kern Vol.1 mixed by DJ Deep.

The other 12” is a collection of tracks picked by DJ Deep exclusively for the compilation. Originally designed to appear on his “Computer Games” album in 2008, Kerri Chandler signs the a-side with “Cobal” – propped on the b-side by new French signee Marcelus, “Y02”, and Psyk wielding his Maan alias on “Jackin”.

DJ Deep even goes to greater lengths and digs up more exclusive works for the mix – Bleak’s thudding “Noon Shape” as well as another entry from Kerri Chandler, this time an unreleased edit Rootstrax’s Harlequin. Both titles are set to come out on Deeply Rooted House this fall, along with a reissue of “Head Talking” a genre-hopping tour-de-force by DJ Gregory.

Meanwhile, the rest of the mix transitions from old garage to classic Chicago acid house via the likes of Visions (aka Juan Atkins) and Armando – “151” being a notable DJ Deep favourite – before techno luminaries Shed and Jeff Mills take up posts in the latter half alongside efforts from contemporary tastemakers Jonas Kopp, Ben Klock and Skudge to drive Kern Vol.1 home.

“When I do these mix CDs, I try to bridge the old spirit of what I used to like so much in house and techno, with what I think is somehow still alive in the new generation of producers, making these, as we say in French, “clin d’oeil” moments. Musically it works so you don’t have to know what’s going on but if you actually look into the track list you will find, for example, a young French guy mixed into one of France’s techno originators.”
Following the s_w_z_k debut album, which came out on Tresor Records before the summer, David Brown offers here further insights into the most recent developments of his new departure.

Receiving the help of long-time collaborator and friend Richard Davis, the duo continues its dive into the concrete and metallic landscapes found on their eponymous LP effort.

The Variant & Empires EP however marks somewhat of a slight departure from the obscure experimental investigations previously undertaken. “TC4 Variant” is a roaring number, aiming specially at the dancefloor and taking the duo’s energy to its highest point, while “Second City Of The Empire” intimately unveils the deeper side of their enterprise.

Twelve years ago Tresor Records released Terrence Dixon’s debut album ‘From The Far Future’ – a personal homage to the art and ancestry of techno, culminating in a discursive and dream-like course through the genre’s many tomes, complete with subtle nods to key protagonists such as Kraftwerk, Derrick May and Juan Atkins. A luminescent and ethereal catalogue of tracks awash with shimmery synths and taught rhythmical programming – that still holds true today, ‘From The Far Future’ made for a stunning first full length that cemented Dixon’s already proven credentials from his Population One work and Utensil Records foundations.

After a string of stylistically rich releases – including another album, ‘Train Of Thought’, this time for Cologne-based label Yore Records – the Detroit native returns to Tresor Records with ‘From The Far Future Pt.2’ – an ambitious, scopey and deeply personal sequel.

“ ‘From The Far Future’ was special in many ways. It’s over 12 years later and seems like yesterday to me, it really does,” says Dixon. “ ‘From The Far Future Pt.2’ is my real life drama playing out before your ears, it has everything on this album that has something to do with where I live. I wanted to make this album as huge as it could be. This is a statement album. A variety of tracks from a minimal point of view.”

Taking the form of a fourteen-track CD and double vinyl LP, with just three overlaying tracks – the bubbly “Fountain of Life”, uplifting “Horizon” and stung out “The Study”, as well as two different versions on the atmospheric builder “Dark City of Hope” – ‘From The Far Future Pt.2’ is a masterful and extensive techno album that alludes to – without relying on – Dixon’s Detroit heritage and affinities. Tracks like the CD’s three dystopic numbers: “Path to Mystery”, “The Auto Factory” and “Lead by Example”, for example, deploy recognisable tropes of techno past, spun into a unique and inherently modern Dixon vernacular. Elsewhere, warm syncopated house (“Self Centered”), wonky jazz (“The Switch”), grainy dub textures (“My Journey Here”) and smoky ambience (“Vision Blurry”) complete this rewardingly heterogeneous CD.

Complementing the headiness of the CD, the eight-track vinyl version of ‘From The Far Future Pt.2’ has been curated squarely with the dance floor in mind, allowing Dixon’s shrewd beat-smithery to come to the fore. From the tough and punchy rhythms of “Light of Day” and “Band Together” to the discordant canters of jangly anthem “Sleight of Mind” and dubby “11th Floor”, there’s something here for any fan of freewheeling and well-versed techno.

Synonymous with Detroit, Techno, and Tresor, Scan 7 have remained protagonists of the Berlin-Detroit axis since it was first forged in the sweaty obsidian of the club’s original Wertheim vault home. Now, over 20 years later, the masked techno collective pay tribute to the triptych’s matted histories on ‘The Resistance EP’.

With identifiable nods to Scan 7’s Underground Resistance affiliations – the label that launched the group, and whose militaristic and political philosophies can be found littered throughout their discography – the EP begins with quintessential Detroit strings and groove before delving into darker techno territory. On the A-side, “The Resistance” offers an uplifting and delightfully nostalgic jaunt through dance music past, using all those favourite and immortal house tropes to deliver instant gratification. Meanwhile, the B-side shows off Scan 7 as masters of warm, yet shadowy techno – plus their trademark drum work – in the hypnotic “Why Not?” and driving, basement-ready “In & Out Of The Groove”.

Alongside many outings on Tresor’s renowned compilation series, Scan 7 produced two albums for the label – ‘Dark Territory’ in 1996, followed up by ‘Resurfaced’ in 1999 – before leader TrackMasta Lou’s Cratesavers Muzik took over as the group’s primary recording outlet. ‘The Resistance EP’ is a welcomed return to Tresor from one of its stalwart artists.

Wuha, what a great journey into Detroit sound again – Mike Huckaby made it back to Berlin and this for a very good reason:
On Saturday 14th of July 2012 it was the Tresor Record Release Party, Tresor.252 – The Tresor EP by Mike Huckaby. And just before the night started, Mike was spinning the deep tunes at beats & boats, but take a look for yourself:

Mike is an active player since more than two decades and has so much more on his desk than just buying vinyl. He´s not only an originator of great sounds, but with his skills in production, Mike also puts his fingers on software-development as you could see at the latest CDR showcase in Berlin. Mike develops stuff for companies like Ableton and Machine and fools around with the latest gadgets like sketching new sounds with the imachine on the Ipad. And all this knowledge is transferred to his pupils within the youthville project. So there was an interesting presentation taking place at Prince Charles: the IOS showcase hosted by CDR. A showcase for all lovers of music which informed about all options that are on the table when its about production methods with apps on the Ipad and Iphone.

So another issue to check out is Resident Advisors clip-series, this time featuring Real Scenes: Detroit. This film gives a deeper insight of Detroit originiators and creators behind the scene – a good overview of the Detroit Techno movement and a peek inside the activity of Mike within the Youthville music class project:

But let´s get back to where this journey started: at Tresor. Mike was hitting the Globus floor at primetime and the audience deeply embraced his sounds, screaming and shouting out for more when he was done. Mike played a great set and made this night a full success and we were able to continue our 1:1 talk about upcoming projects and beyond, so stay tuned for the upcoming Tresor.iginal Magazine #010 – with the main feature story about Mike Huckaby (coming up mid of August 2012). It just seemed like the invader from another planet has landed and he was coming in peace. Thanks Mike, you rock!

Tresor Records are pleased to present S_W_Z_K, the new project from David Brown aka Swayzak. Whilst the name remains identifiable, S_W_Z_K presents a clear departure from his work with James Taylor who recently left the legendary production duo. Taking cues from the outfit’s heavier live material, Brown — with the help of long time collaborator and friend Richard Davis — steers S_W_Z_K into deep and spacious techno on this eponymous debut album.

Before taking different paths in July last year, Taylor and Brown had been producing together since 1997. A union that spawned five studio albums, two high profile DJ comps and stack of genre-spanning EPs, Swayzak became one of the leading figures of !K7 Records, as well as appearing on labels like Force Tracks, M_nus and of course, their own Swayzak Recordings and 240 Volts. But it’s their legacy as a formidable live act that lays the groundwork for Brown’s new direction as S_W_Z_K, turning the pair’s chaotic, experimental and textural live aesthetic into a recorded signature that’s energetic, raw and unrestrained.

“The project was to make sonically powerful music that would work in clubs without necessarily making “club music”. The tracks are very minimal in the sense that no more than ten sounds were used, giving each track space to breathe.” comments Brown.

S_W_Z_K is an Intelligent Dance album with Berlin sensibilities. It balances the more pensive, introverted Warp moments like “Elsenstr. 171” and progressive closer “End of the Line Old Boy” with plenty of floor friendly cuts. From the shimmering Basic Channel-hailing opener “31 Techniques” the album plunges into steelier, hydraulic recesses with “Dimanche Noir” before Artificial Intelligence and the Tresor basement collide in “Neukölln Mon Amour”. The remainder of the album continues to reinvent itself, working over a restricted sound pallet and yet culminating in a diverse, rich and intriguing long player.

S_W_Z_K deftly showcases Brown’s 20 years of electronic craftsmanship, with tracks like the morphing “Marianne F” and multi-tiered “The Last Drop” flaunting a particularly inventive approach to sound design. It’s a stunning juncture in an already prolific and venerable career, and one Tresor Records look forward to fostering in the future.
Today, we are proud to announce the pressing of “The Tresor Track” on wax, making up for a massive A.side cut at 45 RPM. This title is on its way to stand along with the label’s most important classics, a genuine anthem for the Berlin techno institute.

On the flip, Mike Huckaby goes for a stroll through the Tresor building, heading downstairs, exploring the room’s darkest and most twisted corners with “Basement Trax”, going back towards “The Upstairs Lounge” and surprising his audience with some original rhythmic patterns. “The Tresor EP” is a statement, a seal manifesting for a fruitful and long-lasting collaboration between Mike Huckaby and Tresor.

The Tresor exhibition at Red Gallery London started with a packed night on Thursday, 7th of June 2012. The openingnight included not only a very nice selection of photoprints, but additional we installed two monitor-video-installations, we were running a video-lounge, we had the “Im Klang der Familie” book-reading with a chapter ´bout Tresors first days, the screening of SubBerlin by Tilman Künzel and a very interesting paneltalk with Rick Kay, Johnnie Stieler, Mark Reeder and Dimitri Hegemann.

So what is/was this exhibition all about?

Basically we came up with the idea of presenting an insight of Berlins subculture development from the viewpoint of one of its originators – Tresor - which started back in 1991. With timetravelling videoinstallations, a good selection of prints from our archives, painted and pasted artworks, the documetary screening in combination with a paneltalk, Red Gallery helped us presenting all this in their amazing space. By the support of Visit Berlin we were able to run this exhibition with two special highlights: the openingnight and the Tresor Partynight at Red Gallery, happening on the 16th of June with Mike Huckaby, Marcelus, S_W_Z_K – actually those are the creators of our latest three releases on Tresor Records (251, 252, 253) .

How Techno became the soundtrack to the reunification & regeneration of Berlin as a cultural symbol.”The walls were very thick and the energy in there multiplied. That’s why the ceiling was dripping. That’s the way it had to be.”

Tresor’s famous underground dancefloor, which hosted the first generation of the techno-movement until the club’s original premises closed in 2005, saw many things. It saw the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall, when creatives flooded into East Berlin to squat, set up galleries and host clubs. It saw the explosion of techno in Europe, with the arrival of a new wave of DJs from Detroit attracted to Tresor’s aggressive aesthetic and sound system. It saw an “anything goes” door policy which helped cause clashes with the police. And it saw closure, and reinvention, in a new building.

Tresor was born just after the fall of the Berlin wall bringing east and west youth together to the soundtrack of the minimal electronics sound from Detroit.

The exhibition opened an insight into the impact that the club has had into the regeneration and re-branding of this new Berlin.

At just 26-years old and still in the inchoate phase of his production career, Cédric Bros—based in Paris—has already proven a level of sonic maturity and scope with his first two EPs for Deeply Rooted House. Assimilating the essence of early Detroit with modern Berlin, Marcelus’ brand of tough euphoric techno has found a true home on Tresor Records in both calling up the tropes of its back catalogue, whilst remaining thoroughly in tone with today’s darker dancehalls.

Turning in four tracks of increasingly dystopian proportions, the EP begins with “Super Strength”—a tone-setting chug through the swirling vistas of some 90’s imagined future. “Falcon” continues the retroactive theme with detuned chimes, switching up the pace into a more urgent march through plush hisses and crashes. “Radical Groove” is the EP’s feverish peak, a manic headless workout before pealing into blissed out reprieve with “Suspension”. A rubber ball bassline bounds through melancholic ambiance in this poignantly beautiful closer, perfectly tailored for those subdued floor moments.

Tresor Records marks its 250th release with a very special project indeed. Continuing to forge ahead whilst remaining ever mindful of its legacy, Tresor proudly presents Infiniti – The Remixes: a trilogy of classic cuts and new reworks from one of its original Detroit linchpins Juan Atkins.

Dubbed as his “pure techno” project, Atkins produced two full-length albums under the Infiniti moniker—The Infiniti Collection, released by Tresor in 1996, and Skynet two years later. 16 years on and they are as relevant today as they were pioneering then, brought further up-to-date here with a series of fresh takes from some of techno’s pioneering and esteemed figures.

Following versions by Thomas Fehlmann, TV Victor, Function and Redshape on the two preceding volumes, Part Three concludes with a remix package of “Think Quick”. The original Infiniti version is a rarity and was actually only released on Metroplex (M022) in ’94. Backed here with an offering from one of Berlin’s revered electronic practitioners Sleeparchive and the re-release of Moritz Von Oswald’s remodel, which replaced the original version on Tresor’s “The Infiniti Collection”.
