Drawing inspiration from science fiction, Black liberation, and the sounds of Detroit, Huey Mnemonic designs a sound that expands Black consciousness and pushes back against the whitewashing in dance music. The Motor City-based producer and sometimes DJ takes his name from Huey P. Newton and the 1995 cyberpunk film Johnny Mnemonic, a cult classic portraying a dystopian future controlled by mega-corporations. Mnemonic recently launched his Subsonic Ebonics label this summer with the Virtuosity EP.
