Grounded Theory #45
Fri 15 February 2019 - 23:59

(** NOTICE **: there is a small change in tonight’s program. See the notice below.)

Since its beginning in 2009, Grounded Theory has grown from a bracing new idea in Berlin techno to an institution of artistic nightlife both at its home and around the continent. Directed with acute vision and unerring judgment, its philosophy extracted from Henning Baer’s long years at the front lines of electronic music, it remains diverse and cutting edge. Grounded Theory combines music from different eras and areas, remaining rooted in techno while shedding light on sounds less frequently heard on Berlin dance floors: forward UK music, experimental electronics, and underground techno names from across the globe, both new and established. Welcome to Number 45.

Eric Dulan is DJ Bone. Think of Detroit Techno and DJ Bone might not be high on your list of luminaries because he is 100% independent and does things on his terms and on his terms only. He won’t tap dance or bend to fit the “popular” DJ mold. Those who recognize Bone know him for his uncompromising and innovative ways. First and foremost, Bone is a DJ in the truest sense. When he spins, it’s as if the turntables and the mixer become a physical extension of his body. He employs every possible technique in the disc jockey arsenal masterfully: blending, scratching, backspinning, no monitors or headphones; unrivaled in his use of the fader switch and he incorporates them all into every set. From his standing room only residency performances to after-hours spots, he rocks every show as if it’s his last. DJ Bone’s vita is long and rich: the best is to naturally get yourself down to the Tresor Floor for this exceptional night. Jack Adams aka Mumdance is a DJ and producer from the UK, honing an influential and often imitated sound that draws from grime, techno, experimental sound design, hardcore and more. As a DJ, Mumdance inhabits a unique musical space, encapsulated by his weekly Rinse FM show which has seen him comfortably play back to back DJ sets with internationally famous heavy hitters. His list of talented accomplishments is considerable: for example honing a stark, minimalist aesthetic, his 2013 mixtape Twists & Turns was in FACT Magazine’s top ten albums of the year and their 31st best album of the last five years. After a successful collaboration with Pinch, Mumdance also launched Different Circles, his record label and event series with Logos which coined the ‘weightless’ sound – an already-influential combination of grime, techno, music concreté, ambient music & sound design. An experienced collaborator, Mumdance has worked extensively with Pinch, producing a string of dance floor focused EP’s as well as long time collaborator Logos, releasing the critically acclaimed album ‘Proto’ which twisted techno, bleep, tech-step, grime & hardcore into strange new forms. Aleksei Nikitin is Nocow, a Saint Petersburg-based producer who crosses borders between house, techno and modern electronica. Nocow has served as one of St. Petersburg’s most consistently intriguing musical exports over the past few years and tonight will delight us with a live set. Raised on a straight diet of beats and swag, French selector Killa is a vinyl only DJ who favors groovy techno and house gems from the 90s combined with contemporary jacking tunes. Killa is a resident DJ of queer feminist, sex positive collective „Lecken“ (Fk3, Bertrams. Untertage, Maze) and co-organizes local & international events with the KILLASAN sound system since 2014. In the +4Bar: UK artist Sam Coates aka Setaoc Mass performed on our decks a few years back, part of a select cut of young artists who are absorbing techno’s legacy and carrying the torch into tomorrow. Whilst overseeing his own imprint SK_eleven, his releases push a galvanising brand of techno, steeped in a sense of urgency, ever-propulsive with acute detailing and nods to a futuristic space-age. In addition to a debut release on Len Faki’s Figure which has caught the eye of some of the scene’s most respected DJ’s. As a selector, Mancunian Setaoc Mass’s extended DJ sets pull from an expansive spectrum of material both new and old. Maverick talent and Grounded Theory mastermind Henning Baer completes this top-notch night of electronica, providing closing sets for both floors.

*** Notice: unfortunately Mumdance is unable to play tonight. Frequent Tresor guest Milton Bradley will replace him. Milton Bradley is one of the most promising producers within the genre, whose dystopian, industrial-influenced and tripping sounds are also representative of his internationally-acclaimed DJ sets.
