International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on the 8th of March every year. It is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights and tonight we give up the house for an outstanding line-up of women turntablists. In Tresor: Colleen Martin aka Lady Starlight is an American DJ and performance artist, whose keen focus on authentic communication has made her one of the more original and colorful artists to be active in multiple media. True to her namesake, she has followed her own star by choosing to integrate a number of different influences – performance/body art, progressive rock and metal, and electronic dance music – into a single eclectic, but coherent, personality. Lady Starlight’s sets opening for 3 of Lady Gaga’s tours were carried out with a full hardware setup and reveals her signature sound that hasn’t gone unnoticed: her raw, direct and hard-driving style have in fact caught the ear of Figure label boss Len Faki, and she has also been fully integrated into the roster of other forward-thinking labels like Stroboscopic Artefacts and Noventa. Returning DJ Anna Haleta needs no introduction in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. She is running successfully her own event (Pacotek*) for 14 years which was the 1st promoter to bring in many great DJs for the 1st time to Israel. Anna is a real pioneer in the scene there and has also garnered fans in venues across Europe as well. Known for her exceptional records selection and intuitive balancing on the line between genres, Anna Haleta turns her signature style into sets of trippy sophisticated illusion. Her main tool is magic and that’s how she has witched the local scene into her religion, where house, techno and electro are the Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. We also welcome back talented Austrian DJ and Tresor label artist Claudia Anderson, whose “Hysteria” EP was the debut release on Marcelus’ Singular label in 2012. In 2017 we were pleased to release her 4-track EP “Air”, as well as the track “Phase” on 2017’s 25-year Tresor Records compilation “Dreamy Harbor (Tresor.291). And we also present a set by our skilled resident Mareena: her influences range far and wide, including anything from Detroit and Chicago acid to the more hypnotic take on dub, ambient, and techno. Throughout the years Mareena has performed extensively both locally and internationally, accomplishing the rare feat of earning a reputation solely as a DJ and curator. In Globus: impulsive and intuitive hardware house & techno from Vancouver, Minimal Violence is a collaboration between A. Luk and Lida P. The duo has a string of releases to date with labels such as Lobster Theremin, 1080p and Jungle Gym Records. They also make up two parts of Sacred Sound Club, an artist collective, label and event series focused on shifting the narrative of the Vancouver music scene towards its heavier more experimental community, intrinsically linked to the punk roots of the city’s underground club culture. Minimal Violence’s penchant for the heavier and more aggressive side of dance music is most evident in its infiltration of the duo’s often raw and disorientating live set. Drawing on Luk’s years of experience playing in punk bands, they combine hardware sequencers, drum machines and synths, to weave together acid tinged compositions that derive inspiration from early electronic and minimal synth through to heavier UK rave and hardcore. Erika still finds time to accomplish many things in her waking hours, such as being a member of Ectomorph, co-conspirator of Detroit’s Interdimensional Transmissions record label, DJing and making music with her pet machines. An electronic musician of the highest order, Erika focuses on analog synthesis, with live hardware sequencing that allows transformation over time and a deep depth of tone. Antenes is an electronics artist, DJ, producer, modular synth builder and operator based in Brooklyn, NY. Together Erika and Antenes will play back-to-back tonight on the decks. Returning artist Resom is a vinyl DJ moving between releases in electronic music and her musical socialisation. If the dancefloor is a ship, Resom is your captain and she will deliver the beat to you in a spectrum of styles that make her sets truly unique: spinning everything from obscure left field house to fathomless bass; trippy electro to fierce techno; uplifting ’90s jams to relentless cutting edge dance floor onslaughts. Resom has been actively engaged in the social and cultural side of the music scene since her days in Leipzig with the Homo Elektrik collective as well as others. A primary figure in Canadian dance music, Jodie Overland is a force to be reckoned with. Her lengthy DJ experience mean her sets are always a surprise, brimming with a wealth of knowledge in acid, industrial and Detroit techno. Her recent venture into production has been fruitful, with releases on numerous distinguished labels. Overland’s sound is powerful, using classic rave era synths to create cutting-edge dance floor hits.
A huge thank you to these talented women for their rockin’ sets tonight!
