Ahead of the “10 Years of Tectonic” anniversary celebrations in Tresor Club tonight, we asked label manager Pinch some questions about the seminal imprint’s past, present and future. Read the interview here.
Two labels that have grown dear to us, together tonight sharing both floors Tresor and Globus. First up we tackle the ever-changing (post-)dubstep label TECTONIC. The Bristol-based imprint is an absolute contemporary prime example of the almost frenzied drive to innovation that has always been inherent in the UK dance community, having effortlessly managed over the last decade the almost impossible balancing act between progressive intent and staying loyal to its aesthetic. Label owner PINCH discovered Tresor first-hand thanks to a guest slot with collaborator Mumdance within a Dangerous Drums event after which he declared our home as one of his favorite Berlin locations. And because the club is perfectly suited for the current affinities of the label – specifically a 128bpm tempo – and its grand constants – dark sound design, gritty textures and monstrous bass – we see it as cosmic providence to host its anniversary. Tresor is very pleased to congratulate Tectonic on 10 years of cutting-edge development in dance music. For the celebration gathered together will be PINCH himself, his co-Bristolian co-innovator PEVERELIST, the brilliant producer jewel 2562 from Den Haag – also known as A Made Up Sound – as well as SHED from Berlin, a man responsible like none other in the recent landscape for some of the most on-point rave updates. Oi!
And on to our friends at Vanguard Sound!: in 2006 Amir Alexander created Vanguard Sound! Around late 2008/early 2009 he began recruiting a few close peers: G. Marcell, Hakim Murphy, Dakini9, and DJ Spider. He also invited long time best friend Chris Mitchell to join him in running the label since Chris was with Amir one night back in 1998 when the original idea/concept of Vanguard Sound! first materialized. For the first few years VS operated more like a blog, and/or a mix hosting/dance music history website, but in 2011 VS officially became a label. In the almost 5 years since its inception, Vanguard Sound! has put out several landmark records from the label owners as well as a few compilations and a debut by Guerrilla Soul which is a highly slept-on Deep House Alias project by Amir. Vanguard Sound! has also spawned a sister label Anunnaki Cartel which extends the reach of the flagship label to include other like-minded, non-crew members. Some of these artists include Traxx, Joey Anderson, and Nubian Mindz. Both labels are set to release their catalogue number 008 this autumn for a total of 16 releases between them. Completely unaffiliated, non-connected, and without press support or a budget, Chris and Amir toil tirelessly to maintain and advance the artform they came to love and admire almost 25 years ago: raw, gritty, unpretentious, and humble. Chris and Amir are soldiers fighting the good fight for all true students and lovers of underground DJ/Dance Culture world wide.
