Both an artist duo and a label, Basic Channel was established by Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald in Berlin, 1993. They are synonymous with ultra-minimal techno that draws sonic markers from the spatial production of dub music. Their nearly featureless releases under various aliases (including Maurizio/M Series, Rhythm & Sound and others) form some of the most astounding landmarks in dance music. Basic Channel displayed a reverence for early Chicago acid and house and first-wave Detroit techno, the latter of which is manifested in their austere restraint concerning rhythm and composition.
